Want to bring your kids out into the mountains, but have no idea where to go? Not sure what to wear or what to bring to make sure you’re all safe and sound? You’ve probably heard that a map and compass would be useful, but have absolutely no idea how to use them.

This course is designed for adults who want to bring themselves and their younger relatives on short hikes.

Note, this course is not for kids themselves. Instead, it’s to teach their guardians (over 18 years old) how to journey into the mountains safely with children at a later date.

Meeting Location: Ott Carpark, Slievenaman Rd, Newry BT34 5XL, Mourne Mountains

Time: 9am – 1pm.

Course Contents

This is a practical half-day course run in the heart of the Mourne Mountains. The course will cover things like:

  • What preparations and plans you need to make before even setting foot on to the mountain side.
  • What kind of clothing and bits of gear you need to bring to be warm and safe out there.
  • What to eat and drink to help keep you going on your hike.
  • How you read a map to understand the terrain and to confirm where you are.
  • How to use a compass to take bearings or to make sure the path you’re on is the right one.
  • Other suitable routes that you could do that would suit a family-sized group.

What to Wear and Bring Along

  • Harveys Mourne Mountains 1:25000 map.
    • If you’re buying a new one, the Superwalker XT25 version is perfect – super light and waterproof.
    • Make sure the map is waterproofed. You can get a map case or just put it in a large sandwich bag!
  • Your own compass – make sure there’s no bubble in it, as that means it’s broken!
  • Rucksack – a 30 litre one is a good size.
  • Whistle.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Some snacks and something to drink (hot or cold).
  • Clothing that will keep you warm and dry – there’ll be quite a bit of standing around looking at the terrain and maps, so a couple of layers would be good. This includes:
    • General trekking trousers (not cotton).
    • Baselayer and Fleece Jumper.
    • Hiking Boots.
    • Waterproof coat with hood.
    • Waterproof trousers.
    • Hat and gloves.

If the date doesn’t suit, don’t worry… just get in contact and we can arrange to run the course on a day and time that suits you best!

Please note that, so that we can get everyone’s medical and emergency contact details, only one course place can be purchased at a time i.e. If you are buying two course places, you’ll have to make two separate payments. We apologise for the inconvenience but want to make sure we’re all safe and sound out there!
