Have you run on the road, but want to try something new? Are you too scared to go on to the trails on your own? Are you unsure about what to eat, drink or wear? Or maybe you have already raced on forest trails, but struggled with the uphills and downhills.
Alternatively, do you want to do a 26Extreme event but unsure if you’ll make it round? Or have you looked at the Northern Ireland Mountain Running Association’s website and salivated, but have no idea where to start?
Time: 10am – 1pm.
This half-day course for beginners will give you a good dose of skills to help you begin your epic trail running journey. You’ll go away knowing more about:
- What kind of shoes, clothing and gear you need to wear and how to carry it.
- What kind of preparation you need to do beforehand to make sure you’re safe and sound out there.
- How to improve your uphill and downhill technique.
- What to eat and drink before, during and after to help to keep you going on your run.
- How to make use of a map to make sure you’re on the right trail.
- How to avoid injuries.
- Where to find races and routes that might inspire you.
Don’t worry if you think you’re ‘too slow’. A basic level of fitness is required, like having completed a couch to 5k, but speed is not an issue. This course is in fact designed to keep us all together, with lots of time to talk through any learning points.
What to Wear and Bring
- If you already have trail running shoes, that’s brilliant. Please wear them as we’ll be heading out on the tracks and trails. If you’ve only road running shoes, no worries. We’ll be talking about what kind of shoes might suit you going forward and where to get a pair.
- We are going to be out for about an hour in the forest, running and walking up and down hills, so please dress for the conditions. If it’s cold, please wear leggings, a base layer, jacket and a hat as a minimum.
- Even if the weather is fair, please still bring along a waterproof jacket (preferably with a hood), a hat as well as gloves that you can carry on you. This is good practice when trail running.
- If you need some personal water or snacks on the trail, please feel free to bring them along.
- Synge and Byrne cafe is right beside where we will be conducting our course. You might want to bring a bit of money along in case you need a coffee or something else!
If the date doesn’t suit, don’t worry… just get in contact and we can arrange to run the course on a day and time that suits you best!
Please note that, so that we can get everyone’s medical and emergency contact details, only one course place can be purchased at a time i.e. If you are buying two course places, you’ll have to make two separate payments.
